Brightening the Lives of the Community
Alley Beautification Project
City of Grants Pass, OR
Southern Oregon
If you’re like most people you probably view any alley as a cold, dark place where bad things happen. In many cities, this stereotype is true. I have been to many cities, and unless there’s something going on in the alley, I’m not going down it. The fear is real. We’ve all seen the movies and heard the stories.
However, if you have a city full of people who truly care, such as Grants Pass in Southern Oregon, then the people of the town come together and take the bleak and beautify it. They began the alley beautification project two years ago and just recently finished the first one in the Osprey Alley in downtown Grants Pass.
Now that the alley has been transformed into a Forest-like theme, instead of avoiding it, people are attracted to it. It’s bright, it’s lively and it’s fun. It helps people to have something positive to look at as they go about their day and it gives people a reason to walk down the path.
The alley gets even better at night. The 150 foot section is lit up with bright lights that illuminate the three 15-foot hand-made flowers by artist Joseph Johnson of Natural Creations. There’s also rocks and small brush, but there aren’t any benches to sit on, unfortunately.
The best part is that they intend to use this, and other alleys like it, for Summer parties and small concerts. They will rent out the space for vendors and also use it for larger city-wide events.
If you are in Grants Pass, you won’t miss it. It’s between 5th and 6th streets, parallel to H and I streets and adjacent to the parking lot behind ‘The Haul’ restaurant. If you’re in another city, you can view a video on the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber Facebook page.
