Happy Valentire’s Day!

Happy Valentire's Day from Spirit of the Fair

The New Holiday for Motor Lovers and People Lovers Too!

It’s Finally Here!

Thanks to all the wonderful people at Point S Tires, I can finally breathe again. They hooked me up with four brand new off-road tires and new brakes to go around. It’s a good thing I decided to celebrate the New Valentire’s Day Holiday this year, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have splurged yet. I didn’t realize my safety was on the line until I had them look under the chassis.

I knew my tires were getting low on tread, but I had no idea how close I was to costing myself a lot of money on brake repair and a complete replacement. I haven’t been using my truck as much this year as last, but it definitely made sense that both tires and brakes needed replacement.

I was driving all over the Western States the last few years (mainly prior to the Pandemic) and haven’t had either of them replaced since about 2018. My tires were visibly low on tread, but my brakes weren’t making any noises so I hadn’t thought about it yet.

For those of you who may not yet have had to deal with this, if you let your brake pads get too low, you will typically hear a screeching noise made by a little metal tab that begins to rub on the rotors when the brakes get too low.

My truck wasn’t screeching, but it was definitely getting close. Once the screeching starts, you will quickly move into grinding your rotors every time you apply the brakes. This is a very costly repair. Rotors are not cheap to replace and if you screech too much, they can’t fix it. Make sure to get them checked out right away. You don’t want to spend the extra money for no reason, but you also don’t want to lose your breaks in a serious situation.

Speaking of that, I lost my brakes a few years ago in the same truck while I was towing my travel trailer (which isn’t light). The first two things I must mention are that it was not my fault and it’s a good thing I had trailer brakes.

I was literally coming off the freeway, down a hill when it happened. There was a round-about in front of me and when I began to apply the brakes, but the truck didn’t stop, the brakes went straight to the floor. My first thought was, “Oh bleep!” I quickly downshifted and began to apply my trailer brakes to slow down, and a crisis was diverted. Thankfully!

Somehow, some way, the brake hose underneath the truck was rubbing against the exhaust. I seriously couldn’t believe it. We were able to get it repaired in the parking lot of a gas station and I took it to a repair shop, but it was still a major pain and very scary. You just never know what could happen to yourself or someone else. Celebrate Valentire’s Day this year and go get your brakes and tires checked. Your loved ones count on you to fix the things that keep them safe, even if you have to make sacrifices to show how much you care, even if it’s just you!
