Off-Roading is an Obsession
If You Haven’t Tried a UTV, You Definitely Should!
There’s nothing like the feeling of freedom. The only place one can truly feel that way is by going out into nature. There are many ways to experience the wilderness, but one of the best ways is with a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV), or as we like to call it, a Side-by-Side (SXS). UTVs are more geared towards work-related activities and SXSs are mainly for sport and recreation.
For those of you who don’t get the opportunity to experience nature in this way, you might not be aware of how massive the subculture has become. It’s very expensive to get into, so don’t worry. Most people feel the same way. However, if you didn’t already know, you can rent them too! It’s still not super cheap to rent one, but it’s a lot more affordable than purchasing one.
A few years back I got my very first experience on a SXS in Southern Utah. There were about six SXSs in the group and other than getting mouthfuls of dirt in my face, it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a long time. I didn’t even get to drive, and I still had a blast, but mainly because the driver was an actual race car driver. The experience was not for the faint of heart, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to drive fast. That’s just the way we prefer it.
Southern Oregon is extremely majestic, especially when you’re out in the wilderness. Depending on where you are, you might only be able to see the trees in front of you, or you might be able to get a view as far as the eye can see. I was amazed that we drove by about 100 different SXSs that day, and I know that was only a drop in the bucket.
A few years later, I was invited to the Sand Dunes in Southern California at Pismo Beach for another SXS adventure. This was my first experience on the sand dunes, but it was just as much fun as the desert in Southern Oregon, with the exception of the amazing and breathtaking views. Just like the narrow and difficult to see trails in Utah, the sand dunes have their own unique challenges. For starters, in certain situations there’s no way to see other vehicles when going up and down the dunes so a flag is required by law to be affixed to the vehicle.
Since I have always enjoyed taking pictures and making videos, I decided to record multiple experiences on the SXSs. It’s so hard to capture just how amazing and how fun it is so I decided to take my experience to the next level. Here is a fun video from Pismo Beach. I hope you enjoy it.
